'Digging Your Scene/I Backed A Winner (In You)

A pop pintalgada de jazz, e r&b e soul, foi chão que deu uvas na Inglaterra dos oitentas. O Paul Weller com os seus Style Council, a Sade Adu, os Everything But The Girl ou os Swing Out Sister foram alguns dos nomes que levaram essas sonoridades aos tops por esse mundo fora. Outro foi o Dr Robert e seus capangas, os The Blow Monkeys. Embora alguns os reduzam a uns tontos one hit wonders, este precisamente, os Blow Monkeys são muito mais do que isso, como algumas canções memoráveis e as preocupações politicas e sociais expressas nas suas letras o provam. Mas deixemos o Dr Robert divagar mais um pouco sobre esta magnífica canção: “That was the last song [on the album] I wrote and I just did a four-track home demo for the band to hear. It was the first time we started using backing singers. The soul side of my writing was coming to the fore, listening to lots of Marvin. I’d read an article where Donna Summer said AIDS was God’s revenge on homosexuals and I disagreed! The song itself was a homage to those gay clubs like Taboo that I used to go to – even though I’m not gay – because the music and the vibe was so good. You would see everyone from Leigh Bowery to Mark E. Smith there.”
